More than 170 historic images are available now, and new images are being added continually. Photos include such subjects as Northern Pacific trains of the 1870’s, Great Northern steam engines of the 1920’s, and the famous Santa Fe Super Chief. Collectors can purchase everything from prints and mouse pads to coffee mugs featuring images of classic locomotives, trains and railroad scenes. The images also are available for editorial or commercial publication through Index Stock Imagery at photos.bnsf.com The BNSF archival photo gallery is organized by predecessor railroad, era, and type of train or locomotive. Among the available photos are images of all major BNSF predecessor railroads, along with all types of trains and other aspects of railroading, including people and stations. Few original Great Northern locomotives are still in use today. The ones that are, are all repainted and mostly rebuilt or modified by their subsequent owners (BN; BNSF). Some diesel engines are active in a second or third career with new owners (mostly short lines). None of the remaining Great Northern steam locomotives is currently in service, although one, H-5 class 4-6-2 1355, is currently being restored to operating condition. A number of locomotives have been preserved and are on display at several locations. Some are in good condition, others are not, but they all show what the Great Northern was all about.
Only one O-1, #3059, survives. She was put on public display at the Williston, North Dakota depot on August 2, 1958. Number 3059 is the only remaining representative of the mighty 2-8-2's the Great Northern relied on so heavily. This
website was started in 2000, after I visited the Pacific Northwest to see where
my favorite railroad, the Great Northern Railway, had ran and to find traces of
its past. I found a lot more than expected. So much actually, that it became a
good subject for a thing I had wanted to try for a while; to build a website.
Things went downhill (or uphill as you like) from there and the website has
grown into an all-round website on the Great Northern Railway, what is left of
it today, but also what it was in the past. Much more remains to be visited
and/or written about, so this website will keep on growing. 
The
O-1 2-8-2's were assigned system wide. The class stayed intact until 1925 when
the first O-1's were sold to the Spokane, Portland & Seattle. Engines 3023,
3024, 3026, 3028, 3029, 3039, 3043, 3064, 3099, 3108, 3121, 3122 and 3134 were
sold to the SP&S between 1925 and 1944. The first GN O-1 to be stricken from
the roster was
3113 after being wrecked in 1946. The only other wreck in this class was O-1 3128 in
1949. The rest of the class started to be retired in the 1950's, with the last 14
retired in 1957 and 1958, eventually ending up being scrapped in 1962 and 1963.| < Prev | Next > |
