Few original Great Northern locomotives are still in use today. The ones that are, are all repainted and mostly rebuilt or modified by their subsequent owners (BN; BNSF). Some diesel engines are active in a second or third career with new owners (mostly short lines). None of the remaining Great Northern steam locomotives is currently in service, although one, H-5 class 4-6-2 1355, is currently being restored to operating condition. A number of locomotives have been preserved and are on display at several locations. Some are in good condition, others are not, but they all show what the Great Northern was all about.
Only one O-1, #3059, survives. She was put on public display at the Williston, North Dakota depot on August 2, 1958. Number 3059 is the only remaining representative of the mighty 2-8-2's the Great Northern relied on so heavily.
